Kawaii Best Cosplay in Arcade Sona from League of Legends shot with a Sigma 85mm f/1.4 HMS
I have been shooting cosplay photography in excess of five years, in that time I have to say that the most versatile and well-performing lens that I have used has been undoubtedly has been the 85mm.
The 85mm commonly known as the short telephoto lens, it is the primary tool for portrait photographers. Even though many portrait photographers swears by the 70-200mm, the 85mm I find is the workhorse for portrait work.
One of the primary reasons I believe that 85mm is the best ones for cosplay photography is a very versatile lens. In previous blogs, I have discussed the different types of cosplay photographers. The 85mm would is a critical tool for any type of cosplay photographer. If you shoot hallway photos the 85mm give you excellent face rendering.
Unlike other wide-angle lenses like the 35mm, you get little to no distortion out of 85mm.
If you focus more on cosplay portraits or digital art you will find that the 85mm excellent subject isolation. This allows you to get creamy out of focus backgrounds. This is especially helpful when shooting at night with lights in the background. Digital artists will find that the 85mm is the best option to get low distortion images that can be manipulated without having to do a lot of work to clean up the image.
There are other lens options that photographers use. For a convention, a 70-200mm can simply be too heavy and bulky for large crowds. The 50mm is a great option but it doesn't give you the same type of compression and face rendering that the 85mm offers. Anything below a 50mm you then run the risk of lots of distortion.
I find that in a tough spot when I'm shooting a cosplayer I'm always able to walk away with excellent images by simply switching to an 85mm. When combined with good lighting and portrait technique beautiful images are able to come forth.
